Interview with Underoath bassist Grant Brandell
Warped Tour 2007
Raceway Park
Englishtown, NJ
S&S: If you could wake up tomorrow in your own bed, but in another place anywhere in the world, where would you like to be?
Grant: I’ve always wanted to go to the Greek Isles to check out the little villages on the coast.
S&S: If you could learn the total number of hours you have spent in your life doing one thing, what would it be?
Grant: Probably playing video games. I play on tour and at home with my friends, too. I’m a video game guy.
S&S: If you could have a romance with any fictional character, who would it be?
Grant: Oh man. That’s tough. I would have to say Jessica Alba from Fantastic Four. I have a crush on Jessica Alba as it is, and she’s a super hero. So, it’s a bonus.
S&S: If you were to pick a city you’ve played in whose character best represents your own personality, which would you choose?
Grant: I’m kind of in between big city and suburb. I’d probably say San Deigo. It’s kind of laid back and chill but a cool city at the same time. It’s one of my favorite cities.
S&S: If you had to eliminate one odor from the earth, which one would you get rid of?
Grant: The odor that comes from my guitar player, Tim. His body odor. He’s a little hippyish for me.
S&S: If you could make someone else live one moment from your own life, who would you select, and what moment?
Grant: This probably sounds kind of cheesy, but probably my mom and my dad in a moment on stage in front of a really big show. So, they could get the vibe of what I do and see it how I see it.
S&S: If you could break one world record for anything other than sports, what would it be?
Grant: What other world records are there besides sports? Is there a world record for best speller, like Spelling Bee Champion? That could be cool. I could feel really smart.
S&S: If you were paid to write a new book on any subject you wished, what would it be about?
Grant: Can I just write about my life? Is that a subject? That would probably be the easiest thing to write about. I could write about bad movies and why they’re bad. That would be a good one. Yeah, I’ll go with that for now.
S&S: If you lost feeling everywhere on your body except for one spot, where would you want the spot to be?
Grant: Can I have one finger or a hand? I’d probably keep a hand, because you can do so much nowadays with just one hand, like the internet.
S&S: If you could bring any animal on the road with you as the band pet, what animal would you choose?
Grant: The tour manager for Circa Survive has a little four month old English bulldog right now. He’s the cutest thing ever. That’s the dog I want so bad. So, I’m probably going to buy one after this tour, hopefully. It would be pretty cool to bring a chimpanzee on tour. That could be a good time.
S&S: If you had to cast actors to play each of the members of the band in a film, who would you choose to play each person?
Grant: Chris, our keyboard player, would be Chris Farley, because that totally makes sense to me. This is really hard. We have so many people in our band. James, the tall guitar player, would be someone very reserved. I could see him being a Pierce Brosnan kind of guy. Smooth, doesn’t talk much, good looking dude. Aaron…Carrot top. I don’t know! Tim would be Tom Cruise, because he used to have Tom Cruise hair. It was funny. Spencer…I don’t know. I would probably be Brad Pitt, obviously. Spencer would be Edward Norton.
S&S: If you could change one thing about the world, what would you change?
Grant: I’d probably pick world peace. Pollution, hunger, there are so many. You can’t just pick one. It’s impossible. I would take hate away from the world. Michael Jackson would be proud of that one. That’s for you, MJ!
