Terminal 5
New York City, NY
What does a new AFI album mean? An AFI tour, of course. In January, the Bayside rockers released their 10th studio album, Blood. In February, they graced Terminal 5 in New York City with a performance.
The bands Souvenirs and Nothing kicked off the night, getting the crowd pumped for AFI’s emergence. Souvenirs is an emerging rock band also from AFI’s home in California, and this tour wasn’t their first big rodeo; they previously opened for New Jersey natives Senses Fail. Souvenirs recently released their second studio album, Posture of Apology, downloadable on iTunes. Nothing hails from Philly and also have two studio albums under their belt. Tired of Tomorrow was released last year and is also available on iTunes. These guys definitely deserve respect, as their album was originally supposed to be released through Collect Records, owned by the one and only Martin Shkreli. When pharma-bro began making infamous headlines, they swiftly decided they did not want to be involved in that mess and set themselves back to release their album with a different label. It’s quite a feat to keep the attention of fans eager to see the headliners, which both bands did successfully, so check them out!
After the openers got the crowd nice and riled up with the mounting anticipation for the headliners to emerge, Davey Havok rushed the stage with his usual energy. Never disappointing, AFI only played a few songs from Blood and continued with a good medley of newer and older songs. Fans partial to previous albums would not be left unsatisfied. Opening with Decemberundergound’s award-winning hit “Miss Murder”, they followed up with “The Leaving Song Pt. II” from Sing the Sorrow, and then Blood’s “Aurelia”. For the encore, they performed “The Face Beneath the Waves” from Burials, and “This Celluloid Dream” from Sing the Sorrow. Havok leaves no part of the stage unexplored, and lately he’s been crowd walking. Not crowd surfing – crowd walking. Imagine Jesus walking on water, but instead it’s Davey’s feet being supported by the hands of fans. Typical with the crowd walking is one lucky crowd surfer who gets to scream some lyrics into the mic with Havok.
If you live in the tri-state area and missed the NYC show in February, don’t despair! AFI will be returning to Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on June 18th, and Souvenirs accompanied by Nothing will be opening for them again. The last time AFI was at Starland was in 2013 to promote Burials. Tickets are on sale – be sure to get yours before they sell out! Through our bleeding, we are one.
